U.S. Representative Zach Nunn, along with the Iowa Congressional Delegation, has formally requested assistance from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) for turkey producers in Iowa affected by avian metapneumovirus (aMPV). The delegation urged Secretary Rollins to classify aMPV as an eligible adverse event under the Livestock Indemnity Program. This program provides financial compensation to farmers who have experienced significant livestock losses due to events like natural disasters or diseases.
Rep. Nunn highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “Despite devastating financial shortfalls and supply chain disruptions caused by aMPV, there are currently no federal assistance programs available to offset these devastating losses, leaving many family-owned operations at risk of closure.” He emphasized that without immediate support, both the viability of these farms and the stability of the U.S. turkey industry could be compromised.
The Iowa Turkey Federation expressed gratitude towards Congressman Nunn for his efforts. They stated, “Addressing this crisis is critical to restoring the financial security of our turkey farmers and ensuring a stable supply of turkey for consumers.”
Since its emergence in 2023, aMPV has spread across all turkey-producing states, significantly affecting farmers and related businesses. In Iowa alone, flock losses due to aMPV have ranged from 30 percent to 50 percent. Last year’s impact resulted in an estimated loss of 569,700 turkeys and $18 million in farm income.
