Less money allocated to food stamps for Clarke County since 2016

Clarke County saw a 66.9% decrease in the amount of money received from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) since 2016, according to Iowa’s Department of Human Services.

In 2025, the county received a total of $609,810 worth of benefits provided by SNAP, compared to $1,844,384 in 2016.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides monthly benefits to help low-income households buy food. The program is federally funded and administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Qualified recipients in the program are eligible to receive financial assistance in the form of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which can then be used to buy selected groceries. The amount of benefits depends on the net income and household size.

Statewide, Scott County received the highest amount of food assistance benefits, totaling $17,671,566 in 2025.

Overall, Clarke County registered 791 people across 377 households receiving food stamps in 2025. In 2016, there were 1,420 residents assisted by the program living in 644 households.

Since 2016, $16,540,853 has been allocated to Clarke County as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
