Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a limit on livestock auctions on the heels of a horse action in Seymour, according to Union Recorder on April 5, amid the spread of COVID-19.

After hundreds stood by to witness a horse auction, Reynolds has declared that livestock auctions are only to have up to 10 people in attendees. If the auction is about food animals, the limit is 25.

Officials noted that over 150 horses were sold at the Seymour auction.

Her decision also came after 614 people were diagnosed with coronavirus in Iowa.

Reynolds said the new requirement is in play to help residents comply with social distancing mandates.

“They need to practice social distancing,” she said, according to Union Recorder. “They need to adhere to the guidelines that have been in place by the Department of Agriculture as well as the Department of Public Health.”

The only reason the auction was still permitted was “because they are part of the food production supply chain,” she said, according to Union Recorder.
