The Davis County Agricultural Society canceled this year’s Davis County Fair and Ft. Bloomfield Rodeo, with plans to resume in 2021.
The cancellation announcement in mid-May caused some area residents to complain on the Davis County Fair Facebook page that with the fair scheduled from July 14-18, it was too soon to make the decision.
The board worked with public health officials and Davis County Emergency Management in figuring out what restrictions they’d need to follow under the governor’s most recent orders, they said on Facebook. Issues included cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and its cost, sponsorship money, keeping attendees in the grandstand, Bingo area and barn socially distant and the many contracts the fair requires.
The board runs the fair largely with volunteers, which presents its own problems.
“Our volunteers largely consist of the population which are considered at high risk to be infected by this virus. We feel it is in the best interest of our community not to place people at risk,” the board said on Facebook.
They said county residents need to look to the Extension Council for their decisions about 4-H/FFA shows, the board said on Facebook.
