People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is urging Wapello County Attorney Reuben Neff to look into whether cruelty-to-animals charges are warranted against an Ottumwa slaughterhouse.
A press release on the PETA website states that the organization acquired a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report detailing an incident in which an inspector at the Swift Pork Company witnessed a pig that had survived having its throat slit still conscious while being transported on the slaughter line.
In addition to witnessing the pig struggling, the inspector heard it making noises, according to the release. The inspector allegedly attempted to find an employee to stop the line, but did not succeed in finding one prior to the pig being delivered into a ‘scalding tub of water.”
“This disturbing report shows that this pig was condemned to a terrifying, agonizing death at Swift Pork Company,” Daphna Nachminovitch, PETA senior vice president, said in the release.
Nachminovitch urged for a criminal investigation into the alleged scalding and drowning of the pig prior to it having been successfully bled out, according to the release.
