The City of Ottumwa is partnering with Wapello County to help fund a newly opened free COVID-19 testing site in Ottumwa.
“Knowing from what I’ve heard, that it’s taking a long time to be able to get into the places that are offering tests outside other places in town,” Councilwoman Holly Berg told the Ottumwa City Council at an Oct. 20 meeting, as reported by KTVO. “When we’re looking at economic development and getting people back to work as quickly as possible to their jobs, being able to get them tested quickly is paramount to be able to do that so I think it’s really important to continue moving down that path.”
The city council discussed the funding of the north Jefferson Street testing site, which opened Oct. 14, after the Wapello County Board of Supervisors requested assistance from city staff members. The city plans to obtain funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Wapello County is paying more than $127,000 to have the testing site stay open for three months.
