A federal lawsuit has been filed to prevent the Iowa public schools from banning the enforcement of mask mandates because, according to them, a quarter of these students have already seen severe COVID-19 outbreaks this year.

“11 school districts reported more positive cases in the *first* month of school than during the entire previous year. Parents and ARC of Iowa, a disability rights group, are suing the state. #CovidKim is the worst #FreshResists #DemVoice1,” Twitter user Ashley tweeted Sept. 28.

Information excerpted from the federal lawsuit shows that 24.5% of students in Iowa public schools are in a district that experienced significant COVID-19 outbreaks this year, the Associated Press reported.

The documents were part of a lawsuit by 11 parents of students with disabilities and the disability rights group the Arc of Iowa that are suing the state of Iowa.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a study showing that schools without mask mandates were 3.5 times more likely to have COVID-19 outbreaks, CBS News reported.

According to the study, counties with no mask requirements in their schools had a higher rate of pediatric COVID-19 cases after school started than those with mask requirements.
