The University of Iowa announced this week that Jeff Garbutt has been made the newest head coach of the Hawkeyes rowing team.
“Welcome back to Iowa City, head coach Jeff Garbutt!" Iowa Rowing posted on Twitter Oct. 25, welcoming the coach to the program.
Garbutt was excited to return to the area, where he previously worked as an assistant coach for the Hawkeyes and later on, a recruiting coordinator.
“I am extremely excited to return to a truly special place," Garbutt said, according to Hawkeye Sports. "In my previous stop in Iowa City I was fortunate to work with some incredible people in the athletics department, many of whom I consider family. Most importantly, I can’t wait to get to work with the team. They are an amazing group, many of whom I have been fortunate enough to either coach or recruit. It may sound cliche, but this is a dream come true for me. ‘Once a Hawkeye, always a Hawkeye.’”
With the hiring, Garbutt becomes the fourth head coach in the history of the rowing program at the school. He has also served as the head coach for La Salle University male and female rowing teams and formed part of the Iowa coaching staff that earned CRCA Region 4 Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2017-2018, The Daily Iowan reported.
