Last week's Northwestern game against Iowa saw a quick pause during the first half as protesters took to the field displaying handmade signs calling for change.
A student-run organization, Northwestern Community Not Cops, has since voiced responsibility for the protest, continuing to vocalize their calls for change on social media.
“Our demands? Open meetings between students & the board of trustees at least 2x/yr. Concrete deadlines for our demands as well as @fossilfreenu, nu dissenters, & other campus org demands, systems that center and protect survivors of sexual violence,” Northwestern Community Not Cops posted on Twitter following the demonstration.
The nine protesters, displaying handmade signs, called on the university to abolish Northwestern’s police department and invest in Black lives. Other signs voiced concern for the funding of the "War on Palestine" and called on the Board of Trustees to meet with students, according to InsideNU.
A report by Sports Illustrated after the demonstration said it took security only about five minutes to remove the protesters from the field so the game could resume.
As they were escorted out, InsideNU reported the protesters dropped their banners on the floor and left them before departing.
