Fewer Wapello County households received food assistance benefits in 2021

Wapello County saw a 0.6 percent decrease in the number of households participating in Iowa's Food Assistance Program from 2020 to 2021, according to a Wapello County Guide analysis of data from the state's Department of Human Services.

In 2021, 2,831 households (5,376 residents) in Wapello County participated in the Program compared to 2,849 households (5,519 residents) in 2020.

Overall, $10,419,149 in food assistance payments were allocated to Wapello County households in 2021.

In 2020, $7,567,361 was allocated for Wapello County households in the Program.

Qualified recipients in the Program are eligible to receive financial assistance in the form of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which then can be used to buy groceries. The Program is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's larger Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
