Southwestern automotive students receive statewide scholarships

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) automotive students Koby Namanny of Cumberland and Wyatt Vasey of Winterset each recently received a $2,500 scholarship for the fall 2022 semester from the Iowa Automobile Dealers Foundation for Education (IADA).

Namanny is a May 2022 graduate of Atlantic High School. He is in his first year as a fulltime student in SWCC’s auto collision repair/refinish program. He is on track to earn a diploma in auto collision repair/refinish in June 2023 and then plans to continue in the second year of the program to earn his Associate of Applied Science in auto collision repair/refinish.

Vasey completed the SWCC automotive repair technology Career Academy program during his junior and senior years in high school. He graduated from Winterset High School in May 2022 and is now a fulltime student in SWCC’s automotive repair technology program. He plans to earn his Associate of Applied Science degree in automotive repair technology.

The IADA scholarships are awarded to support students across Iowa who are in pursuit of degrees preparing them for careers in the automotive industry. According to the IADA website, www.iada.com, many scholarship winners study to be automotive technicians, while others study collision repair or pursue diesel training. The 2023 scholarship applications will be available on Dec. 1, 2022.

The SWCC collision repair/refinish program is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). In addition, the program offers I-CAR ProLevel 1 & 2 certification in refinish and non-structural. Training is provided by a lead instructor who is designated ASE Master Certified and an I-CAR Platinum Individual. Both SWCC automotive programs offer one-year diploma programs and two-year Associate of Applied Science degrees; as well as programs for high school students to earn college credits.
