SWCC carpentry program donates student-constructed doghouses

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) carpentry and building trades program donated six finished doghouses to two animal shelters within the college’s region last week.

Ron Utley, SWCC’s carpentry and building trades instructor, along with a portion of SWCC’s carpentry and building trades students, delivered three of the doghouses to the Clarke County Animal Shelter in Osceola and three additional doghouses to the Lamoni Pound in Lamoni.

Construction on the doghouses began during a competition of area high school students during SWCC’s 2022 Career & Technical Education (CTE) Day on October 14.

School districts participating in the carpentry competition included two teams from Lenox High School, three teams from Mount Ayr High School, and one team from Murray High School.

Following CTE Day, students from Southwestern’s carpentry and building trades program finished the doghouses on the college’s campus.

This project involved a great deal of collaboration from all parties involved. Donations included approximately $300 each from North Lumber in Leon, Gilbert True Value in Leon, Gilbert True Value in Osceola, and Highway Lumber in Osceola.

This is the second year SWCC’s carpentry and building trades program has donated the CTE Day doghouses.

Last year’s donations went to Dog Gone Rescue, Inc and Creston Animal Rescue.
