Outfielder and third baseman Bethany Wright of Canberra, Australia, signed a National Letter of Intent in early-December to head to the United States in January 2023 to earn her college education and compete with the Spartans of Southwestern Community College in Creston.

Southwestern Head Softball Coach Danny Jensen can’t wait to get Wright on campus this spring.

“Bethany is a very experienced and talented outfielder, as well as a third baseman,” said Jensen. “She has played on successful travel teams, has won several big-time awards, and has even coached youth teams.”

Jensen said Wright will be eligible for the spring 2023 softball season.

In 2022, out of 150 travel players, Wright landed the Boomerangs U17 Leadership Award; in 2018-19, the Boomerangs coach’s award; and from 2018-21, the Clare Warwick award, which goes to the junior player of the season. She was an ACT state representative at various age levels and was selected for the U14 Australian Representative squad to New Zealand in 2018. Wright earned her umpiring certificate and has umpired for SUAACT softball from 2019-22, in addition to coaching and assistant coaching.

In addition to athletics, she has been involved in band and drama; acted as a student leader and been on senior leadership team; and served as a student ambassador and mental health ambassador.

“It is apparent that Bethany’s outgoing personality and strong work ethic are taking her places, and we’re glad it’s bringing her here to Southwestern.” stated Jensen. “She has been so involved in high school activities and has been a leader in many organizations. We welcome Bethany to the Spartan family.”

Wright is the daughter of Andrew and Jules Wright of Canberra, Australia. She attended high school at the University of Canberra Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra.
