Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met electronically on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at 5:30 p.m., for their regular monthly board meeting.

During the discussion of monitoring process, Fred Shearer, board member of Corning, asked about the college’s facility use agreement with Greater Regional Health for the use of the former Walmart building, located at 612 New York Avenue in Creston, by SWCC athletic teams. Dr. Marge Welch, SWCC president, responded stating the college teams had been practicing in the facility for a while, but just recently the two entities formalized the agreement. She said the additional space has been great in meeting the needs of the college due to limited gym space at the college.

Shearer also asked about the coworking model being launched at the Osceola and Red Oak Centers in 2023. Wayne Pantini, SWCC assistant vice president of economic development, said coworking is a concept that allows workers to utilize space in a facility for their office needs. Coworking services include items such as a desk, conference room access, kitchenette access, internet, copy and print services, etc.

Pantini said, “It could be start-up businesses or traveling workers [that have needs for coworking] … This will be a service offered in these communities that they don’t currently have.”

Jerry Smith, board member from Osceola and Community Colleges for Iowa representative, reported the organization’s next meeting will be held in late-January.
