U.S. Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03) has voiced his support for law enforcement officers who are grappling with the repercussions of open border policies. He expressed concern over the crisis at the Southern Border, stating that it impacts Iowans despite their distance from the border.
"The crisis at our Southern Border is affecting Iowans even though we’re more than 1,000 miles away. Local law enforcement is being strained by the consequences of the open border policies supported by this Administration," said Nunn. He further highlighted that many officers in his community have reported an increase in fentanyl-related crime due to these policies.
Nunn emphasized his commitment to supporting law enforcement, stating, "I will always back the blue, which is why I introduced two amendments to better understand the burden being placed on the backs of our law enforcement officers." He vowed to continue his efforts to secure borders and protect communities from dangerous drugs.
The Police Our Border Act requires the U.S. Attorney General to identify and create a plan to address the burden placed on law enforcement due to the crisis at the Southern Border. Rep. Nunn introduced two amendments:
The first amendment, which passed unanimously, aims to identify how much local law enforcement has spent in taxpayer dollars on investigating, intercepting, and processing fentanyl.
His second amendment, also passed unanimously, seeks to determine the impact of reassigning local law enforcement officers to cover fentanyl-related crime.
The Police Our Border Act was passed by a vote of 254 – 157 and now awaits consideration in the Senate.
