U.S. Representative Zach Nunn has introduced a resolution aimed at amending the U.S. Constitution to require a balanced federal budget. The proposal seeks to address what Nunn describes as "out-of-control spending" by the federal government.

"In Iowa, we have common sense, we work hard, and we live within our means. Families, farms, and Main Street businesses balance their budget – and the federal government should do the same," stated Rep. Nunn. "It’s time to restore a sensible, functional government that works for the American people, not one that recklessly spends money."

The current U.S. debt exceeds 36 trillion dollars, which has prompted this legislative effort to promote accountability and reduce wasteful spending in Washington, D.C.

Nunn's resolution outlines a Constitutional amendment that would prevent total outlays for a fiscal year from surpassing total receipts unless Congress approves the excess through a three-fifths roll call vote in each chamber. This measure would exclude outlays related to debt principal repayment and receipts from borrowing.

The full text of the proposed legislation is available for review.
