U.S. Representative Zach Nunn has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at addressing the shortage of truck drivers in the United States. The legislation, co-led by U.S. Representative Pat Ryan, proposes the creation of tax credits to incentivize truck driving. The bill, known as the Strengthening Supply Chains Through Truck Driver Incentives Act, seeks to mitigate supply chain disruptions and alleviate financial pressures on American families.
Rep. Nunn emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “Right now, we’re facing a serious shortage of truck drivers, and it’s putting pressure on Iowa families and our nation’s supply chains.” He highlighted the recruitment and retention challenges in the trucking industry and the need for solutions to support Iowa’s economy.
The bill proposes a refundable tax credit of up to $7,500 for current truck drivers who work a minimum of 1,900 hours annually. It also includes an enhanced credit of $10,000 for new drivers and those in apprenticeship programs. This initiative aims to attract more individuals to the profession and encourage experienced drivers to remain in the workforce.
Rep. Ryan underscored the essential role of truck drivers in the economy, saying, “Truck drivers keep the American economy moving forward. They work long, hard hours with little support to make sure that people across the country have everything that they need for daily life.” He stressed the importance of incentives to retain drivers and reduce supply chain disruptions that lead to higher consumer prices.
Industry organizations have reported a significant shortage of qualified drivers, posing challenges for recruitment and retention. The President and CEO of the American Trucking Association, Chris Spear, highlighted the benefits of the proposed legislation, indicating it would make trucking careers more appealing by providing tax relief: “Helping more qualified drivers get behind the wheel is essential to ensuring our industry can continue to deliver the nation’s freight safely and efficiently.”
Brenda Neville, President and CEO of the Iowa Motor Truck Association, voiced support for the bill, stating, “Iowa’s trucking industry provides over 100,000 good-paying jobs and fulfills an essential role in our supply chain.” She lauded the initiative for easing financial burdens on new drivers and promoting rewarding employment opportunities.
The legislation has received endorsements from prominent industry organizations, including the American Trucking Association and the Iowa Motor Truck Association.
