U.S. Representatives Zach Nunn of Iowa and Nikki Budzinski of Illinois have introduced a bipartisan bill designed to assist the incoming generation of family farmers in Iowa. The proposed legislation, known as the New Producer Economic Security Act, is aimed at enhancing access to land and financial resources.
"In Iowa, agriculture is the backbone of our state, and our farmers are the backbone of agriculture," stated Representative Nunn. "That’s why I’m fighting to ensure young and beginning farmers have the tools they need to access the credit necessary to purchase farmland. Young farmers who are willing to do the essential work to feed and fuel our world should be commended and supported."
The legislation comes as the average age of a U.S. farmer nears 60, and nearly half of the farmland in the U.S. is expected to change ownership within the next two decades. This bill is seen as crucial for the future of agriculture in Iowa.
Congresswoman Budzinski commented on the importance of the initiative, saying, "If we are going to revitalize and strengthen American agriculture for generations to come, we need to take steps now to ensure young farmers can succeed. I’m proud to sponsor bipartisan legislation aimed at helping young and beginning farmers access land, markets, and capital — the biggest challenges for new and underserved farmers. I’m thankful to Representative Nunn and Senator Smith for joining me in this effort, and I look forward to working together to ensure this legislation is included in the 2025 Farm Bill."
The 2025 Farm Bill is viewed as a key opportunity to tackle the obstacles that prevent new farmers from acquiring land. The New Producer Economic Security Act is designed to overcome these barriers.
