U.S. Representatives Zach Nunn of Iowa and Brittany Pettersen of Colorado have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at increasing support for individuals dealing with substance use and mental health disorders. The proposed legislation, known as the Communities of Recovery Reauthorization Act, seeks to enhance the existing Building Communities of Recovery program. This expansion would allow for greater funding opportunities for local community organizations dedicated to developing and providing recovery support services.

“Too many Americans have a family member, friend, or someone they know who has struggled with opioid addiction. This crisis is devastating communities across the country and we need to act now to save lives,” stated Representative Nunn. He added that while efforts must be made to curb the influx of illegal drugs into the United States, there is also a pressing need to support those currently battling addiction. According to Nunn, broadening access to local recovery resources will assist individuals in rebuilding their lives and strengthening communities.

In a stark illustration of the crisis, Nunn highlighted data from 2021 showing that drug overdose deaths surpassed homicides by more than threefold, with over 150 Americans succumbing daily to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Iowa, Nunn’s home state, recorded 398 overdose deaths.

The Communities of Recovery Reauthorization Act aims to provide further support to peer-led recovery services, housing, job training, and other community-based resources tailored to those in recovery. With a focus on locally driven solutions, the bill seeks to ensure that support systems are both accessible and responsive to the specific needs of each community. Nunn emphasized that addressing the opioid crisis involves bolstering mental health services and equipping local organizations with the necessary tools to achieve meaningful outcomes.

The complete text of the bill is available for public review.
