U.S. Representative Zach Nunn of Iowa's Third District has introduced a resolution aimed at safeguarding Medicaid and SNAP benefits for vulnerable populations in the state. The announcement follows his visit to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, where he engaged with healthcare professionals to understand the significance of these programs.

During the tour, Rep. Nunn interacted with several doctors including Dr. Hijinio Carreon, Dr. Mustafa Eldadah, Dr. David Chew, Dr. Tom Wernimont, and Dr. Brad Wilcox, as well as Imaging Director Cindy Hecht. "Medicaid gives more than 150,000 people in our communities access to medical care, while SNAP ensures that 60,000 individuals know where their next meal is coming from," said Rep. Nunn.

The proposed Defending Medicaid and SNAP Resolution aims to prevent any budget reconciliation bill from reducing benefits for children, seniors, pregnant women, or individuals with disabilities while maintaining Congress's ability to address fraud and abuse within these programs.

Chris Mitchell of the Iowa Hospital Association expressed support for Rep. Nunn’s initiative: “The Iowa Hospital Association appreciates Congressman Nunn’s efforts to protect Medicaid eligibility and benefits for the more than 700,000 Iowans who rely on the program for health coverage.” Mitchell highlighted Medicaid's role in covering significant medical services such as births and inpatient stays across Iowa hospitals.

The resolution will be applicable to all reconciliation bills considered during the 119th Congress.
