Representatives Zach Nunn of Iowa and Pat Ryan of New York have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at reauthorizing the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program with increased federal funding. The proposed legislation, named the More Funding for COPS Act, seeks to double the financial support provided to local police departments.

"In Iowa, our local sheriffs and officers are often the first and only line of defense," said Rep. Nunn. He emphasized the need for strong public safety across all towns in Iowa, regardless of their size or location. Rep. Nunn expressed pride in leading this bipartisan effort to enhance hiring and resources for law enforcement in small and rural communities.

Rep. Ryan highlighted his vision for a safer Hudson Valley, stating, "More affordable, more safe, and more free – that’s the Hudson Valley I want for my kids and for yours." He underscored the importance of equipping local police departments with necessary tools to protect communities effectively. According to Rep. Ryan, many small and mid-sized police departments lack adequate resources, which is why he supports this initiative to ensure fair treatment for officers.

The COPS program was initially established in 1994 to assist local law enforcement agencies in hiring officers and implementing community policing strategies designed to build trust and prevent crime. However, it has not been reauthorized since 2009. The new bill aims to formally reauthorize the program while significantly increasing its funding from $685 million in FY25 to $1.16 billion.

Chief Chad McCluskey of Waukee Police Department commented on the importance of this legislation: "Local departments like ours are expected to meet growing needs in our communities with limited resources." He noted that the More Funding for COPS Act would be crucial in providing officers with necessary tools and support.

The bill has received endorsements from organizations such as the U.S. Deputy Sheriff's Association, the National Association of Police Organizations, and the Waukee Police Department.

Text of the bill can be found here.
