Representative Zach Nunn, along with Representative Pat Ryan, has introduced the Joint Reserve Detachment (JRD) Formalization Act in Washington, D.C. This bipartisan legislation aims to enhance national security by solidifying a partnership between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the military reserve force. Representatives Rob Wittman and Pat Fallon have joined as original cosponsors.
"As a Colonel in the Air Force, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is to connect battlefield experience with cutting-edge innovation," stated Rep. Nunn. He emphasized that the JRD Formalization Act will create a permanent team within the DoD to expedite new technology adoption.
The proposed bill seeks to establish and maintain the Joint Reserve Detachment within the Defense Innovation Unit. This unit would support approximately 50 reservists who link military expertise with commercial tech solutions, directly aiding Combatant Commands.
Rep. Ryan remarked on his experiences as an Army intelligence officer, stressing the need for modern capabilities over outdated systems: "By leveraging our greatest asset – talented, patriotic Americans willing to bring their technical expertise to bear to serve our nation’s defense – we’re actively driving and enabling DoD to adopt new tech and capabilities."
Rep. Wittman highlighted the importance of providing warfighters with advanced technologies: "As the Pentagon works to deliver capabilities at the speed of relevance... I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing the JRD Formalization Act."
The JRD plays a significant role in preparing the Department of Defense for modern threats by integrating reservists into its innovation pipeline. The formalization of this structure is intended to keep U.S. forces competitive and ready through adaptable solutions.
