Representative Zach Nunn of Iowa's 3rd District, alongside August Pfluger from Texas' 11th District, has sent a letter to key congressional leaders. The letter is directed at Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. It calls for a sanctions package aimed at increasing pressure on Russia amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Rep. Nunn emphasized the need for Congress to provide tools that would empower the President to act decisively against Russia if it fails to engage in negotiations. "President Trump just put Putin on the clock. Now it’s up to Congress to deliver the tools needed to hit the Russian war machine if he refuses to come to the table," stated Rep. Nunn.
The initiative follows President Trump's recent ultimatum, which gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a 50-day period to negotiate a ceasefire agreement. The proposed sanctions package seeks alignment between congressional action and presidential pressure, advocating for measures that would remain until Russia commits to a permanent ceasefire.
