Health care workers in Clarke County are benefiting from a little ingenuity and collaboration between businesses in the area and two Clarke Schools employees.

Industrial Technology Instructor Dave Lyden and his wife, Annette, who also works at the school, had been working to develop face shields for area health care workers. Their solution included using the school’s 3-D printer to make the shields for doctors, nurses and other workers.

Making the shields takes about an hour using the printer, so the couple has started cutting the frames for the shields from wood using a laser cutter. They also have altered their original design to include vent holes to prevent fogging and making the frames longer.

Local businesses have chipped in to provide materials. Hormel/Osceola Foods, Miller Products Company, and Highway Lumber have contributed the wood, plastic, and acrylic sheeting needed to produce the shields. Solutions! has also donated face shields to the couple.

The Lydens expect to eventually distribute 100-200 face shields.

"We couldn’t be more proud of our community, always stepping and working together when times are tough," Bill Trickey, Executive Director of the Clarke County Development Corporation, told the Osceola Sentinel-Tribune.
