City of Ottumwa issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.
As Ottumwa cleans up after Monday’s thunderstorms, residents with a few downed branches can place those items out for the weekly curbside yard waste collection. Brush and tree limbs must be properly prepared to be collected curbside. Remember the "3-3-50" rule; limbs under three inches in diameter, cut into lengths no more than three feet and tied into bundles no more than fifty pounds. Leafy debris and sticks may be disposed of in any compostable bag with the $1.00 green yard waste tag per bag, which are available at most grocery stores.
To ensure curbside collection, place yard waste at the curb by 4 AM on the day of collection. Yard waste may not be disposed of with general trash in your trash cart. Curbside Yard Waste collection south of the Des Moines River is on Tuesdays; collection north of the river is on Thursdays. The curbside program is not intended for large amounts of debris, logs or disposal of entire trees.
Residents may dispose of all sizes of yard waste at no charge at the Ottumwa/Wapello Landfill. The Landfill is open 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and 7:00 AM to Noon on Saturdays. All loads going to the Landfill must be covered.
Professional yard service and tree contractors disposing of branches at the Ottumwa/Wapello Landfill are subject a commercial green waste tonnage fee of $30-per-ton fee for these items with a minimum of $7.50 up to 500 lbs.
