CITY OF OTTUMWA: Holiday Luminary Display Rescheduled to New Year's Eve

Announcement

City of Ottumwa issued the following announcement on Dec. 23.

Because of high winds, the Historic Preservation Commission has rescheduled its holiday luminary display set for Wednesday December 23, 2020. The Historic Preservation Commission for the City of Ottumwa will instead line the streets of the city’s four residential National Historic Districts with luminaries on Thursday, December 31 from 6-8 p.m. “The Vogel Avenue residents have a history of lining their walkways with luminaries,” says Commission Chair Dennis Willhoit. “Last year they revived the project and the Commission had the idea to extend the project to all the residential historic districts.”

The luminary project in the Vogel Place District will expand to include all the streets in the district in addition to lining the Fifth Street Bluff, North Court and North Fellows Districts as well. Willhoit says that it is an ambitious project for a commission of only five members and they would be excited to welcome others to lend a helping hand.

Prepping and distribution of the luminaries will begin on Thursday, December 31 at 1 p.m. at central locations in each district. Lighting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Willhoit says that volunteers need not live in the historic districts. “We will gladly welcome volunteers from anywhere.” Volunteers can contact Willhoit at 515-418-5692 or dennis.willhoit@gmail.com to volunteer and for details.

The luminaries will glow from 6-8 p.m. and Willhoit encourages the public to be cautious while driving through the neighborhoods or suggests in some districts, walking might be a better option. “Park the car, wear a mask, practice physical distancing and enjoy a leisurely walk through our historic districts,” he says.
