Primary Candidates Set for October 5, 2021

Webp genbusiness010

City of Ottumwa recently issued the following announcement on August 27.

There will be a primary election to determine the final candidates for City Council and Mayoral race in this fall’s City election.  Three Council seats will become open this fall along with one Mayor seat. Current Council Members Holly Berg, Matt Dalbey and Mayor Tom Lazio did not submit papers for re-election. Currently appointed Council Member Rick Johnson filed papers to run for Mayor. In total, nine citizens filed papers to run for City Council and three citizens filed papers to run for Mayor.  Because of the number of candidates filing nominations for both City Council and Mayor, a City primary election will be necessary to reduce that race to six candidates for Council and two candidates for Mayor.  Before the primary elections take place, candidates have until 5:00 P.M. on August 31, 2021 to withdraw or submit objection petitions to the City Clerk’s office.

The primary election for City Council candidates will be held October 5th, four weeks before the City regular election on November 2nd.  After the canvas of votes is presented on November 9th, the top vote getter will then replace the appointed City Council Member Johnson to fulfill the remainder of the term.  This elected official must take his/her oath of office by November 19th. This is due to City Council appointing a member to complete the term of one of the seats that was previously vacated.

Candidates filing nomination papers for City Council include:

  • Cara Galloway, 1219 N. Fellows Ave
  • LeRoy Hanna Jr., 442 N. Fifth St.
  • Russ Hull, 939 S. Sheridan Ave
  • Doug McAntire, 208 E. Park
  • Mitch Niner, 420 Hackworth St.
  • Ashley Noreuil, 158 Vogel Ave.
  • Sandra G. Pope, 426 N. Green
  • Matt Pringle, 313 Oakwood Ave.
  • Brad Stines, 238 N. Fairview Ave
Candidates filing nomination papers for Mayor include:

  • Rick Bick, 1204 N. Wapello
  • Rick Johnson, 1595 N. Van Buren Ave
  • Robert LaPoint, 525 Ray
The deadline to file the required paperwork to be on the ballot this fall was 5 PM on Thursday, August 26th.
