SWCC carpentry program donating student-constructed doghouses

Swccccc

Southwestern Community College recently issued the following announcement.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) carpentry and building trades program is donating six finished doghouses to Creston’s animal rescue organizations Dog Gone Rescue, Inc. and Creston Animal Rescue.

Construction on the doghouses began during a competition of area high school students during SWCC’s 2021 Career & Technical Education (CTE) Day on October 15. School districts participating in the carpentry competition included CAM, Creston, Essex, and Lenox. Following CTE Day, students from Southwestern’s carpentry and building trades program then spent approximately seven full class days finishing up the doghouses on the college’s campus.

Ron Utley, SWCC carpentry and building trades instructor, oversaw the project.

“The doghouse-building contest is a highlight for high school students each year at CTE Day,” Utley said. “This year we’re taking it one step further by finishing these structures so some of our local animal-assistance organizations can utilize them to care for the animals they rescue.”

This project has involved a great deal of collaboration from all parties involved. From Akin Building Center of Creston donating approximately $300 in supplies, to the high school students who began construction of the doghouses, to the college students who wrapped up the project and finished assembly; as well as the SWCC student ambassadors who painted the structures when they were complete, it truly was a combined effort.

The finished doghouses have an estimated value of $225.
