Southwestern ensemble to release album

Southwestern Community College's School for Music Vocations (SMV) singer/songwriter ensemble MULTIPLICITY will release an album, entitled “One,” on October 28, 2022. The SMV Multiplicity album, directed by SMV faculty member Kathryn Severing-Fox, is a seven-song EP that will be released on all music sites, including Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube.

The album was recorded at the end of the spring 2022 semester in Southwestern’s state-of-the-art recording studio on the college's Creston campus. The name of the ensemble is attributed to the fact the student members of SMV Multiplicity play multiple instruments and sing, and switch instruments with each new original song. The concept for the ensemble is one unique among collegiate songwriting ensembles, and a concept that Severing-Fox envisioned.

The ensemble does not focus on one type of music, but rather collaborates to co-create each student’s vision for their own original song. The album will feature one song by each of the ensemble’s seven members from the 2021-22 academic year. Helping the students record, produce, and mix the album were Severing-Fox, as well as Dr. Jeremy Fox, one of the two co-directors of the music program at Southwestern. Fox said hundreds of hours were spent recording and mixing the album, but he says it is important the music students in this ensemble learn how to produce their original music as close to professionally as possible. It is a skill, Fox says, that he believes will prove invaluable to them for their futures. Fox would know, since he is a graduate of Southwestern’s music program and was awarded a Grammy nomination for one of the songs from his own album.

Song titles featured on One are as follows:

  1. A Thousand Paper Cuts – Emily Rapczynski
  2. To Be Home – Aviana Gedler
  3. need u – Hannah Goodwin
  4. You Can Be Mine – Emma Midcalf
  5. The Girl With Striped Shoes – Ethan Dix
  6. Stuck – Michael Kennedy
  7. Afar – Ellora Silke

After 12:01 a.m. on October 28, 2022, look for SMV Multiplicity’s album “One” however you listen to or purchase music online. For more information about the album, contact Dr. Jeremy Fox, Southwestern professional music instructor, at 641.782.1466 or at fox@swcciowa.edu.
