With the start of the fall 2023 semester, the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training program will have a powerful teaching tool to utilize in the classroom—a fully operational ambulance.
Greater Regional Health donated the used ambulance to SWCC in the spring of 2022 when the medical facility upgraded to a new ambulance. While the working ambulance will be used in a number of classroom and training environments, the vehicle will likely get the most use during Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and advanced EMT classes.
“Once the ambulance is stocked to replicate an in-service rig, the EMS classes will sign up for times to use the ambulance during class sessions,” said Megan England, SWCC coordinator of EMS training programs. “Having the ambulance on campus will allow instructors to offer real-world experiences during training, create patient care scenarios in the confinement of an ambulance, and allow students to role play, even possibly experiencing medical situations as the only provider in the back of the vehicle.”
England thanks Greater Regional for this invaluable teaching tool and looks forward to watching students thrive in these newly created learning environments.
“I greatly appreciate Greater Regional for their continued partnership, as well as this wonderful donation,” stated England. “This will help our students gain confidence and overcome nervousness as they move into clinical settings, eventually becoming successful certified providers.”
