Iowa has reported an additional 91 COVID-related deaths Oct. 6, a sobering statistic for a state that has already lost thousands.
The statistic has brought the governor of the state, Kim Reynolds, under fire for not taking more action to prevent the spread of the virus.
“Um Kim. Manage Iowa better. Lagoon, and 90 more covid deaths reported this week. Do your job, Kim,” Twitter used WickedLady tweeted.
Reynolds has criticized President Joe Biden’s decision to enforce a vaccination mandate.
“President Biden is taking dangerous and unprecedented steps to insert the federal government even further into our lives while dismissing the ability of Iowans and Americans to make health care decisions for themselves," Reynolds tweeted Sept. 9.
The vaccination rate in the state was at 54.3% on Oct. 6, making Iowa the 23rd in the nation in terms of vaccinated individuals, the Associated Press reported.
Over 9,000 new confirmed positive tests were reported in the week leading up to Oct. 6. Of those, 23% were individuals under 18 years of age.
AP reported that 89 of the 91 newly reported deaths have occurred since August, with the remaining two having occurred earlier this year. Iowa’s ranking in terms of deaths is at 25th in the nation, coming in exactly in the middle.
