Arkansas man charged with first-degree murder after man found dead in Iowa home

Police from the Hardin County Sheriff's Office arrested a 22-year-old Arkansas man after 74-year-old Steve Reece was found dead in his home in Union, Iowa.

The suspect is Osborn Gavel, a man originally from Baxter, Arkansas, according to KATV. 

“A 22-year-old man from Baxter, Arkansas, has been charged with first-degree murder in Hardin County," according to the KLMJ/KQCR website.

KLMJ/KQCR reports that at 5:33 a.m., the Hardin County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from 302 Commercial St. in Union reporting an unresponsive male. Deputies located Reece dead inside a bedroom of the home. 

According to KLMJ/KQCR police say Gavel allegedly struck Reece in the head, causing his death. Gavel had stayed with Reece on the evening of Oct. 11 with several others. 

There is currently no information on the relationship between Reece and Gavel and why he was staying at Gavel's residence.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations is helping local authorities on the case, according to Radio Iowa. 

According to KLMJ/KQCR, Gavel is currently being held at the Hardin County Jail and faces the mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole if he is found guilty.
