Those who want to buy tobacco in Iowa now have to be 21 years old, not 18, a new law Gov. Kim Reynolds signed states, according to KMA Land.
Reynolds made Senate File 2268 an official law when she signed it on July 1, increasing the legal age to purchase tobacco to 21.
Brandy Powers, the assistant administrator with Page County Public Health, who is also the tobacco prevention coordinator for Adams, Fremont, Montgomery, Page, Ringgold and Taylor counties explained the law further.
"Under this law, it would be illegal to sell or supply the covered tobacco or nicotine products to anyone under the age of 21," Powers told KMA Land. "Someone who is under 21 cannot purchase, possess or attempt to purchase any of the covered tobacco or nicotine products."
Powers said she’s also seen more younger people use tobacco in innovative methods like vaping – some before their 18th birthday.
