In a unanimous vote, the Food and Drug Administration approved boosters for all adults 18 and older. This decision came Nov. 19, as the U.S. and Europe began to see a trend of steadily rising cases. Europe in particular is seeing a record spike in cases from the delta variant.
Physician Dorette Noorhasan tweeted: "In case you missed it last week — #FDA approved #booster #shots for all adults 18 years and older. Please stay #safe and #healthy this holiday season."
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention strongly recommends adults over 50 and immunocompromised individuals receive their booster shot six months after they are fully vaccinated. The same medical advice applies to those who are under 50 and aren’t immunocompromised, but the CDC says that those individuals “may” get their booster shot, and aren’t in any rush to do so, CBS News reported.
Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in an FDA release, “Streamlining the eligibility criteria and making booster doses available to all individuals 18 years of age and older will also help to eliminate confusion about who may receive a booster dose and ensure booster doses are available to all who may need one.”
